1.7m subscribers lost by telecom operators in March

Telecommunications subscribers numbering 1,653,286 were lost in March, says the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).The information was contained in the Monthly Subscriber/Operator Data released Friday in Lagos.It confirmed an active telecommunications service customers, previously put at 154,120,484 in February but narrowed down to 152,467,198 in March, 2017. The data also showed that 151,999,197 of the 152,467,198 active numbers subscribed to the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) network services.There is also a decline in GSM operators’ active customers by 1,662,350 of the 153,661,547 subscribers recorded in February.Of the GSM operators, MTN had 60,391,959 users in March, with a shortfall of 998,738 from the 61,390,697 recorded in February.Globacom pushed up its customer tally in March by 78,372, giving a total of 37,328,827 customers, as against 37,250,455 in February.34,656,605 subscribers were on the Airtel network in the month under review, reflecting a decline by 175,576 users, from the 34,832,181 accounted for in February.Etisalat, like MTN and Airtel, shed off its customer base by 566,408 in March, leaving behind 19,621,806 from a previous 20,188,214 users in February.Users of the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) stood at 217,566 in March, same as in February.Of the two active CDMA service providers, Visafone leads with a distant 213,106 customers, being trailed by Multi-Links with 4,460 in the month in view.The monthly data also showed that the Fixed Wireless network (landline) consumers remained unchanged at 26,865 in March.Visafone maintained its lead with 26,437 subscribers while Multilinks keeps trailing with 428 customers.The Fixed Wired operators (landline) subscriber base pushed up by 1,000 to a total of 125,635 users in March, contrary to 124,635 recorded in February.The Fixed Wired arena showed MTN Fixed increased by 968 from 8,564 in February to 9,532 in March, while Glo Fixed increased to 12,747 users by just adding five customers in March from February record of 12,742.
