1,237 Nigerians turned away at Germany borders this year

By Akinwande OnadekoNo less than 1,237 Nigerians have been stopped from entering Germany this year as the German police are set to turn away 20,000 migrants at the country’s borders, airports and sea ports in 2016.

According to the Neue Osnabruecker Zeitung (NOZ), it reported that from January to November, 2016, 19,720 persons were prevented from entering the country. This figure was obtained from the German Federal Police.Statistics for December are however yet to be compiled.The 2016 number marked more than a hundred percent increase compared to that of 2015 which had 8,913 migrants stopped at the country’s borders.Despite the overall increase, it has been reported that the number of people turned away by the police has been reducing in recent months.”˜This is partly due to the fact that Germany’s border controls now only takes place at the Austria border’, NOZ reported.Afghan asylum seekers had the highest number of people turned back with a number of 3,695 people in 2016 so far. In addition, 2,142 Syrians, 1,794 Iraqis and 1,237 Nigerians were all turned away this year so far.According to Germany’s Interior Minister, Thomas de Maiziere, he said the country had to take such a step until the European Union was able to sufficiently control its external borders.
