The traditional workplace is gradually fading away for the millennial generation which is considered to be one of the most creative and passionate generations yet. Millennials bring many positive qualities to the workforce. They are creative, innovative, confident and basking with energy. The problem however is the older generation don’t always take Millennials seriously. Nevertheless, in a few years from now, the older generation will have to give the Millennials the opportunity to prove they are ambitious and talented individuals because nearly half of the work force will consist of Millennials. Therefore, if you hope to prove yourself and be taken more seriously at work, here are a few things you would have to do.
- Know your industry. If you want to keep your career moving forward and achieve your goals, you must pay the price of becoming an industry expert. Stay abreast of the latest industry news, updates and trends that impact your employer. This will help you contribute more ideas to the workplace and understand the future of your work.
- Make continuous learning a priority. Your education does not end with your first or second degree, not even a third. Education is a continuous thing. Throughout your career, it is up to you to take advantage of opportunities to learn new things and keep your skills fresh by reading industry journals, blogs, learning a new skill or attending company professional development events. Never stop learning.
- Display accountability in your work ethic. Accountability is a key to earning respect in the workplace. When something goes wrong, don’t point fingers or place blame on a co-worker. It’s up to you to take responsibility for your actions, whether they are good or bad.
- Adapt your communication style to your colleagues. Everyone communicates differently and so do organisations have specific communication models. It is pertinent to communicate the way your boss and colleagues expect you to. For example, if your company has its own in-house email through which the company expects everyone to send or receive official correspondence, then it is expected that you use that tool. This will ensure you are on the same page as your colleagues and boss and that you’re following expectations.
- Don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed. It is okay to help when it’s truly needed. If there is a project or tool you need help in understanding, reach out to a colleague who might be able to help. On the flip side, if you’re feeling overwhelmed with your work load, you should talk with your boss about prioritizing.
- Be approachable. It is important to have a positive attitude and body language in the workplace. Even if work is stressful, do your best to keep your head up and help others. Your positive outlook will leave a lasting impression on your clients, colleagues and boss.
- Stay engaged and show your passions. Lastly, it is important to be actively engaged in your work and show passion for what you do. Bosses and employers want to see that you are genuinely interested in your work and are performing to standards and if possible, exceeding expectations.
