Akwa Ibom governor sets up panel to inquire into the collapsed church building

A panel has been set up by the Akwa Ibom government to investigate into the collapsed church building which claimed many lives on Saturday.

According to witnesses, it was said that 50 people perished in the tragedy but the police claims it to be 32 persons.According to Gov. Udom Emmanuel, Akwa Ibom governor, he said the inaugurated panel would be called Commission of Inquiry (Collapsed Church Building) 2016. He said his power to constitute the commission was derived from Section 2 of the Commission of Inquiry Law, Cap.33 of Akwa Ibom State 2000.Rt. Justice Umoekeyo Essang was named as the Chairman of the commission of the eight-man panel while Mrs. Emem Daniel of the State’s Ministry of Justice was named as its secretary.Governor Emmanuel said the commission would submit its report in three weeks from the date of its first sitting or within such extended period as may be allowed after written approval.The commission is expected to inquire into the immediate and remote causes of the building collapse and examine the roles played by persons and institutions in the disaster. Also, under its terms of reference, it is to identify any person, institution or authority responsible for the collapse of the building and indict persons, organizations found culpable and also recommend the appropriate sanctions to the government.Founder of the church, Akan Weeks has recorded a radio interview in Uyo, apologizing and appealing for forgiveness, claiming to have also sustained injuries and was recovering in an undisclosed clinic.
