Amendments of Labour Act 2004: Bill passes second reading

The House of Representatives has passed the second reading of the amendments of the Labour Act 2004, in an attempt to take Nigeria out of the present economic challenge.The amendment was meant to protect jobs in the formal sector and reduce unemployment.It demands the compulsory registration of all foreign employers of labour in Nigeria, to strengthen and review penalties for violators.The Deputy Speaker, Yusuf Lasun said that “the amendment would provide jobs for the youth.”“What government can provide is only 10% of the employment need of the country. It is the formal sector that can provide, so we need to put legislations that would protect the interest of the country and its people,”  Lasun added.Other bills that passed second reading are the one seeking to establish Maritime University and a Bill for an Act to prohibit the desecration of sanctity of human life.
