Arsenal signs Mohamed Elneny from FC Basel

Arsenal has completed the signing of midfielder Mohamed Elneny from FC Basel on a long-term contract, the Premier League club have confirmed. The 23-year-old midfielder spent three years with the Swiss club, making over 90 league appearances and winning three consecutive Super League titles. He featured 28 times in all competitions in the first half of this season, scoring six goals. Elneny becomes the first outfield player Arsenal has signed in a year since Gabriel arrived from Villarreal last January, while Petr Cech is infamously the only signing made over the summer. “The transfer is subject to the completion of regulatory processes,” reads a statement from the club. “Everyone at Arsenal would like to welcome Mohamed to the club.” Elneny began his senior career with El Mokawloon in the Egyptian Premier League. An experienced Egypt international, he helped his country to the quarterfinals of the London Olympics in 2012.
