Declaring through its popular online Amaq news Agency, the group described the perpetrator as a “Soldier of the Islamic State who carried out the Berlin operation in response to appeals to target citizens of coalition countries.”The attack which took place at a Christmas Market in Berlin left 12 people dead and dozen others injured.German Police released Pakistani’s 23-year old asylum seeker formerly suspected to be the driver of the truck, citing lack of enough evidence for his arrest as authorities continue the search for the perpetrator(s) whom they admit might still be at large; while UK Home Office warns Berliners to be “extremely vigilant and follow advice of local authorities.”The truck owned by a Polish company was carrying 25 tons of steel when it veered into the crowd at the Market, stopping only when it hit a large Christmas tree.A sober Angela Merkel on the scene of the attack said she was “horrified and deeply sad about what happened” expressing “disgust” if the culprit turns out to be an asylum seeker; nevertheless calling for Germans to discard fear in the Holiday season.“We don’t want to live with the fear of evil paralyzing us. We will find the strength for a life as we want to live it in Germany- Free, united and open.” Merkel said.Tons of Berliners gathered at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church close to the attack site to pay their respects to victims.
