(Breaking) IPOB: Court Throws Out Kanu’s Bail Application

By Correspondent

Justice James Tsoho of Abuja Federal High Court on Friday refused to grant bail to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and founder of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, together with two other persons earlier arraigned with him. The accused persons are being prosecuted for treasonable felony alongside other offenses which border on their call for declaration of the Sovereign State of Biafra. While throwing out the application, the judge declared that they were not eligible to be granted bail on reason that they failed to convince the court that they would not continue to commit the alleged crime for which they are being prosecuted. Justice Tsoho further agreed with the argument raised by the prosecution counsel, Mohammed Diri, who had earlier objected to the bail application filed by the accused persons. The lawyer had specifically argued that Kanu and others are likely to interfere with and intimidate prosecuting witnesses. The court also held that, contrary to the contention by defense counsel, the charges preferred against the accused were not trumped up. Justice Tsoho also said that instead of contradicting the allegations raised against them, Kanu alongside others, only went on to insist that the agitation for the Republic of Biafra was within their rights. The court also declared that the IPOB boss’ insistence that he has dual citizenship of Nigeria and Britain, goes further to heighten his chances of jumping bail. Justice Tsoho, who consequently ordered that the accused persons should remain in Kuje prison throughout their trial, also ruled that that there should be an accelerated hearing into the matter. The case has been adjourned until February 9, 10, 11 and 12.
