CAN Says IDPs Have Been Abandoned

By Correspondent

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed displeasure over the neglect of thousands of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in various camps across the country. The National Executive Committee of the association, during a meeting in Abuja, revealed that government at all levels had not shown enough concern for people displaced by insurgency, adding that the shoddy manner in which the IDPs had been treated so far underscored the low premium placed on the welfare of citizens. The Chairman and Secretary, Barrister Danladi Yerima and Barrister Raphael Adejumobi respectively signed a communiqué after the meeting, advising that policies and programmes be put in place to cater for displaced persons including those who reside in homes of relatives and helpers. The committee commended the Borno State chapter of CAN and also lauded the contributions of other non-governmental organizations and individuals for their sacrifices and prayed God to reward them. The communiqué disclosed that the victims of the 2011 post-election violence are yet to be compensated by the federal government. It reads: “Some northern governors have converted such funds to some other uses due to their intolerance of the prospective predominantly Christian victims. Churches, shops and homes that were destroyed have remained unrepaired; even some governors that were willing to disburse the funds completely abused the whole process to the detriment of the Christian victims.” “This nation belongs to all of us and as such, everyone’s fundamental human rights must be guaranteed irrespective of tribe, religion or political inclination.”
