In Nigeria, much is determined by how much education you have. Many that have made wrong choice of universities have ended up more frustrated than they started. So, choosing rightly is a function of many variables.Presently, the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) has made a new regulation, unlike it used to be, that you only have one choice of university, polytechnic and a college of education each as against up to three choices in the past. This only limits the chances of the candidate, allowing for no alternative. In this case, should the “University of choice” decline a candidate’s application, the candidate is almost certain to wait for another year. Also, in choosing a university one must be aware of many other things in addition to just passing the requisite examination. Alas! This is the painful truth. In some universities, merit counts for nothing, if you don’t know the “right” people or pay the right price. As far as some of these universities are concerned, you are as good as what your pocket says. That is on a lighter note. You need to score very high marks in the Unified Tertiary Matriculations Examination(UTME) conducted by JAMB. Just recently in the University of Lagos, a candidate with a UTME score of 250 out of 400, will still not be qualified for admission into a course like Sociology. Their reason being that the student’s name was not forwarded to the University by JAMB!Securing a University admission is not just about passing JAMB and sitting down at home expecting your luck to shine. It requires more!
