Customs Comptroller advises Nigerians to be cautious of buying expired rice

Customs Comptroller, Ikeja Unit, Comptroller Mamudu Haruna revealed that most of the rice smuggled through Idiroko, Seme, Jibia and other border stations were expired. He urged Nigerians to take caution when obtaining rice from smugglers as such rice caused deleterious effects to the body.

He further went on to say some of the smuggled rice have been impounded by the Customs and kept in warehouses. Also, he revealed that most youths engage in rice smuggling even going as far as risking their lives carrying five to six bags on a single motorcycle.Extensive measures have been put in place at various terminals and warehouses to stop the smugglers from continuing their act.So far, 210 different seizures have been recorded ranging from vegetable oil, foreign parboiled rice, smuggled vehicles, poultry products, e.t.c. Also, 77 suspects have been apprehended, 17 out of which have been charged to court for prosecution and four convicted but on Appeal at the Appeal Court, Lagos.He was however pleased with the increased demand in locally produced rice grown in the country.
