Dasuki seeks redress at ECOWAS Court

The immediate past National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), on Thursday, dragged the Federal Government (FG), before the Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), praying for his freedom from security forces after he was granted bail by two separate high courts. The detained former NSA has consequently asked for a sum to the tune of N500, 000, 000.00, as compensatory damages against the FG for violation of his human rights as guaranteed and protected by the Constitution. Dasuki also wants the court to issue a declaration, that his continued detention in defiance of court orders granting him bail, is illegal. The former NSA is further praying the court to issue a declaration, that his continued detention is unlawful, arbitrary and egregious violation of his fundamental human rights as guaranteed by Sections 34, 35 and 41 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (As Amended), Articles 5, 6 and 12 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act Cap D9 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 among other statutes. He is also praying the court for a declaration that, “It is an unlawful violation of his human rights to personal liberty and freedom of movement as guaranteed and protected by Sections 35 and 41 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (As Amended); Article 6 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights; Article 9 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and Articles 3 and 13 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and others.”
