Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) had its members gather round the ExxonMobil Lagos office to protest against the sacking of the Nigerian workers.A similar development happened on Wednesday in Upkenekang Community in Akwa Ibom where angry youths disrupted the company’s operations against the laying off of its contract workers from the area.Over 1,000 protesters blocked the entry points to the company with boats, coffins, leaves and placards with different inscriptions.Mr. Paul Eboigbe, Chairman of the ExxonMobil Branch of PENGASSAN, affirmed the shutting down of the company’s Lagos office.According to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the company issued sack letters to its workers in the midst of an ongoing negotiation, thus the union had to resist the action of the management by shutting down the ExxonMobil headquarters. Also, Mr. Eboigbe directed the company’s workers at offshore locations to shut down rigs.According to the unionist, he said the company disregarded laid down procedures and went ahead to sack workers when plans to explore a more peaceful resolution were being made.Mr. Tokunbo Korodo, the South-West Branch Chairman of PENGASSAN, said that the picketing of ExxonMobil was carried out by members of its union which was due to the anti-labour practices of the company. He further went ahead to state that it was just the beginning of the industrial action against injustice shown towards its members.”˜Our members now wear red clothes and put leaves on their trucks to show the injustice by these people’, he said. However, Mr. Oge Udeagaha, the Manager, Media and Communications of the company said the company was still assessing its operations and efforts were being made to resolve the situation as the company respected the rights of its workforce.
