Hong Kong auction on Wednesday displayed a luxury Hermes handbag, priced for $380,000, an amount higher than world auction record. Gigi Ho, Christie’s spokeswoman said.
It was remarked that the buyer of the dull-looking white “Himalaya” crocodile skin Hermes Birkin bag was not mentioned by the auction house.
The handbag has 18 karat gold buckles and strap loops coated with 205 diamonds. It was manufactured in 2014.
It was bought for 2.94 million Hong Kong dollars ($380,000), an amount which Christie said is a record for any bags sold at the auction event.
The bag was previously valued at HK 1.5 million but later revalued for 2 million ($193,000-$258,000) at the event within a space of 10 to 15 minutes of competitive bargaining involving phone and online buyers, Gigi Ho said.
The selling price is above $300,000 for which a 2008 model of similar Birkin bag with same provisions was sold.
Christie said the Himalaya Birkins derived its name from the range of smoky gray to pearly white colour it has, that which depict same appearance with the mountain range.
