The Northwet governors have condoled with the Lagos State government over the Ikoyi building collapse that left over 40 persons dead.
The delegates were led by Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari and his Kano State counterpart Abdullahi Ganduje to the site on Wednesday as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu showed them others dignitaries around the site.
The 21-storey building located Ikoyi area of Lagos collapsed on November 1 , 2021.
Masari said: “We are here representing governors of the Northwest to condole with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, bereaved families and Lagosians on the unfortunate incident.
“We cannot escape high-rise buildings in Lagos, but we must ensure they do not cost lives and properties. We are happy that the governor has instituted an inquiry tribunal that will unravel what happened here.
“There is little we can do but to once again console the Governor and people of Lagos State over the incident, and pray to God that such will not happen again. On behalf of the people of Northwest, accept our sincere condolences and sympathy.”
While noting that Lagos is a mega city, the governor said comparing it to any other mega city in the world, and considering its peculiar features of lack of adequate land for development, increasing population, high density, constructing high rise buildings cannot be avoided.
“But it is unfortunate that we have found ourselves in this situation.”
Thanking his counterparts for the visit, Sanwo-Olu appreciated them for the kind gesture. He added that their gesture showed that Lagos was not alone.
