Series of programs were outlined to celebrate Lagos at 50 in spite of the fact that all is not well in the state, considering its status as a mega city and commercial nerve centre of the country, as students of some secondary schools in the centre of the city, especially Eric Moore School in Surulere are struggling with their studies in a non-conducive environment. The students, whose school is a stone throw to the residence of former governor of the state, now minister of power, works and housing, Babatunde Fashola, have their classes in an improvised shelter without seats. Eric Moore was established in 2003 and has an unverifiable population of 761 students as documented on www.lagosschoolsonline.com.
A staff member of the school said “You will pity the students whenever it rains. It is always difficult to teach them in such condition. Hopefully, the government can do something urgently about the school” According to the Guardian, the public relations officer of the State’s Ministry of Education, Mr Adeseun Ogundeji, was not sure if the school is listed among the ones to be refurbished by the government in its continued rehabilitation effort.
