Let us beg for COVID-19 vaccines – Peter Obi advises FG

Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi is appealing to the Federal Government to reconsider its plan to use 80% of the nation’s health budget of N547 billion to procure COVID-19 vaccines. In his opinion, the quantity Nigeria needs “cannot cost more than N150 billion”.

In an interview with Channels Television, on March 2, he implored the FG to contemplate begging drug manufacturers and more financially well-off nations for the vaccines. He went further to say that it makes little sense that 80% of its health budget be used for the procurement of Covid-19 alone.

The former Vice-Presidential candidate believes that instead of such excessive spending by the FG, the nation ought to publicly declare its poor financial standing and beg for vaccine donations. After we receive donations, he added, then we will know the remaining quantity to be bought.

“…I can lead them, we’ll go and kneel down and say, we are a poor country. There’s nothing in saying it. Saying that you’re poor is not a crime because you’re poor. You have poor people who can’t feed, so why are you still throwing money away? We’ll go and beg them and they’ll give it to us for free and support us. That’s what we need.”
