Miami Opens: Konta becomes first British at the final

Miami Opens has produced the first British lady finalist, Johanna Konta, who upstaged seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams 6-4 7-5. The 25-year-old Konta stands to contend with world number 14 Dane Caroline Wozniacki, who won Czech second seed Karolina Pliskova 5-7 6-1 6-1. “Caroline’s one of the best athletes on tour, so I know I am going to be running for a lot of balls. “I’m looking forward to it, it is going to be a battle and I will try my best.” Konta said. 36-year-old Venus only salvaged one of the two breaks by Konta in the first set as the latter progressed into a 3-0 lead. Williams managed with her first serve but saved five break points not too long in the second set prior to breaking Konta to have a 3-1 lead. Williams was broken on three instances by the British number one, who fought back, confirming her victory immediately after midnight local time. With the current standing for Konta, she will assume a promising world number seven position in the event of her lifting of the trophy on Saturday.
