Money Laundering: Appeal Court Upholds Judgment Against Lamido’s Son

Kaduna Division of the Court of Appeal has thrown out the appeal initiated by the son of former governor of Jigawa State, Aminu Sule Lamido.The young Lamido was dragged before a Federal High Court sitting in Kano by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegation of money laundering of which he was found guilty.It would be recalled that the former governor’s son was apprehended by operatives of the EFCC at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport while on his way to Egypt over his refusal to declare a sum of $40,000 in the Customs Currency Declaration Form after the initial declaration of the statutory $10,000 to the Nigeria Customs Service.The former governor’s son was on February 4, 2013 docked on a one count charge that touches on false declaration of foreign currency.He was prosecuted and consequently convicted with an order that he should forfeit 25 percent of the sum that was not declared.However, not satisfied with the judgment, the former governor’s son initiated an appeal with a request that the judgment be set aside.The Court of Appeal in its judgment delivered by Justice Habeeb Abiru affirmed the judgment of the lower.
