Ngige to manufacturers: Source raw material locally because of FOREX

The Nigerian government has told labour unions to support its efforts at reducing the country’s over dependence on imported goods and raw materials, which are depleting the nation’s foreign reserve.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige made the appeal after he received members of the National Union of Food, Beverages and Tobacco Employees in Abuja.Dr. Ngige noted that government was unwavering in its efforts to ensure that industries remain operational, so as to check job losses.The minister also asked the “union to do more by assisting the federal government proffer solutions to the excessive reliance on imported goods and raw materials. We want you to put on your thinking cap and devise ways and means of lessening reliance on importation by sourcing your materials locally to preserve our foreign exchange.”He lauded the group for complementing government efforts in stemming youth unemployment, by not only focusing on workers welfare but also diversifying into job creation ventures.The President of NUFBTE, Lattef Idowu Oyelekan had appealed to the government to help  companies address challenges faced in accessing foreign exchange for the importation of raw materials.
