Minister of Interior Abdulrahman Danbazau announced this after the first FEC meeting for the year 2017, presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari. He said the aim is to enhance the capacity of the Nigerian Fire Service, especially in the area of tackling fire disasters across the country.“The last time such equipment were procured was in 1996 so the ones we have in the inventory today are very old so on assumption of duty I went round the stations in the country and discovered there is dearth of firefighting equipment so we reflected that in the 2016 budget. So this procurement will go a long way in providing the service with the necessary equipment,” he said. The Interior Minister further said measures have been put in place to standardise the operations of the service in all the States of the country.“The various States also have their Fires Services and some of these incidences happen there. So we are also moving to partner with the State governments, to come up with an acceptable standard on fire services delivery instead of allowing each state to have its own standard,” the Minister said.He said training would also be enhanced in all the departments of the service, to enhance the efficiency of its personnel, adding that more able bodied men would soon be injected into the service.“We are also making efforts to improve on the existing facilities in the Fire Training School and we also intend to partner with an entity that has been training on fire services particularly in the oil and gas sector. Through that we will be able to enhance the capacity of our fire fighters,” he explained. He warned that all agencies including those of government must abide by safety standards and put in place fire preventing mechanism within their premises, else those found wanting would be sanctioned.Source: Agencies
