In furtherance of its mandate to help people realise the benefits of their countries’ endowment with oil, gas and minerals, the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) has commenced the second batch of the Masters Class in Oil and Gas Reporting for journalists at The School of Media and Communication, Pan-Atlantic University. On the rationale behind the training, Dr Dauda Garuba, Nigeria Officer of NRGI, said that NRGI seeks to equip journalists covering the Oil and Gas sector in Nigeria with the right tools and information that will ensure that the right questions are asked from all stakeholders in the sector. He said there is an urgent need for transparency and accountability in the oil and gas sector in Nigeria in order to ensure that resources are channeled the right way. According to him, the oil and gas sector is too important to be left in the hand of operators and governments alone because of its importance to the development of the country. He challenged journalists to engage the system constructively so as to ensure accountability is entrenched in the sector. In one of her presentations at the training, Mrs Toyin Akinniyi, the Media Capacity Development Associate of NRGI, called on journalists to make truth their watchword.
