Okonjo Iweala Named Among Five Women Doing Good around the World

By Correspondent

Former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy in Nigeria, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been named by Devex among five powerful women doing good around the world. In a tribute to the minister posted on the organisation’s site, Dr Iweala was praised for increasing transparency in Nigeria’s economy when she was minister. The tribute reads: There is a will to fight, Ngozi has said about Africans’ impatience with government, corruption and waste. And this economist is nothing if not a fighter. She rolled up her sleeves in Nigeria’s notoriously rough-and-tumble politics, aggressively tackling cronyism, increasing transparency and fostering investment as Nigeria’s Finance Minister. Before overseeing Africa’s largest economy, she managed an $81B operational portfolio for the World Bank. Now Ngozi looks to a new fight: providing life-saving vaccines for the over 19 million children still in need each year, as Chair-elect of the Board of Gavi, the vaccine alliance. Devex, the media platform for the $200 billion global development industry, launched this recognition in honour of the effort being carried out by these awesome women around the world. ”˜Think social entrepreneurs, heads of foundations and aid agencies, corporate sustainability pioneers, public figures and elected officials,’ says the statement from Devex. It continues, ”˜The women on our list are at the forefront of creating the change our world desperately needs. Sign up to be the first to hear when we announce the names of these amazing women.’
