Ondo: Union protests workers’ sack and non-payment of salaries

By

The Hotel and Personal Service Senior Staff Association has condemned the sacking of 187 workers of the Owena Hotel, Ondo State without following due process. The union also claimed that the sacked workers’ entitlements had not been paid.mimikoA statement jointly signed by the National President of the union, Adeyemi Ademola; the acting General Secretary, Gbenga Isola; and the National Publicity Secretary,  Ahmed Bala, stated that the workers were owed 19 months’ salaries. The union expressed displeasure over disengaging workers without paying their salary arrears and three months’ salaries in lieu of notice. It said that the workers were locked out of the motel owned by the Governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko, and sacked verbally without letters of disengagement. The union alleged that after active service of the workers in the motel, the governor failed to pay pensions.“The governor has not paid the retirement benefits and gratuities of the affected workers up till now. Redundancy package as collectively agreed has not been paid in line with the hotel’s conditions of service. The governor did not pay the expected three months’ salaries in lieu of notice. Leave bonuses over the years have not been paid,” HPSSSA added. The union urged the Ondo State governor to address the issues raised and pay the entitlements of workers. It added, “In order to clean the stain this might cause, we advise the governor to address all the issues raised above without delay. It should be clear that the salaries and other benefits of the workers are still accruing since their appointments were not legally terminated and we challenged him to show the contrary. Posterity is waiting by the corner, as it is never too late.”
