Peace Corps is a uniformed organisation recently accorded recognition and affiliation by the Nigeria’s Ministry of youth and development.The Southwest Zonal Commandant and the Lagos state Commandant of the organisation, Mr. Mutairu Habib at a press conference said that the move was borne out of the need to create a platform where creativity, peace and national development can thrive and as well create employment opportunities for the teeming youth. “We are out with a mission to  train, educate and re-orientate the youth of the state on their future leadership role in the society, the art of nation building as well as as teaching them on how to become good citizens of this country with due respect for constituted authorities, democratic norms and rule of law” the Commandant said.Recruitment processThe Commandant explained that each prospective cadet officer will pay a sum and purchase the entry form for the exercise.According to him “the amount for the recruitment exercise is a donation and it’s a voluntary donation of forty thousand naira and a form of one thousand five hundred naira for the one month training exercise. These also cover the accommodation, medicals, provision of uniforms among others for the intending officers”. Peace Corps billRecently, Nigeria’s National Assembly passed the bill establishing the Nigeria Peace Corps and it’s currently awaiting the Presidential accent.Mr. Habib said “presently the Peace Corps is still a Non-profit organisation, until the government accent to the bill that it now becomes a full-fledged establishment.” He emphasised the credibility of the organisation and any form of payment requested by it has a full backing of the nation’s anti-graft agencies.Categories of membershipThe Commandant noted that it has Student, Volunteer and Regular membership and that only the regular one who made the payment for the exercise will earn salaries at the end of the day.The Southwest Zonal Commandant maintained that the difference between the Peace Corps and other security agencies is their relationship with the United Nation.“We will be working with the UN and we have our desks offices all over the world and the UN has also outlined programme that we will engage in. Our work also has so much to do with schools where we will inculcate discipline and checkmate examination malpractice and arrest cultists,” he noted.Responding to the question on whether the organisation will bear arms in future operations, Mr. Habib said “we are going to be carrying arms, and we will carry what is more than arms. About two thousand cadet officers are expected to be recruited in Lagos while the exercise lasted.The state Commandant of Peace Corps however called on the people of Lagos to partake in the exercise which will last till the 31st of January, 2017.He also enjoined prospective candidates to visit the state headquarters at 16/18 road, Jakande Gate, Oke-Afa, Isolo Lagos state south west Nigeria or call 08036307374, 08038551152, 07065869775 for further enquiries.Source: Gov.
