Researchers hopeful of eradicating diabetes in patients

Recent study conducted Tuesday by researchers in the University of Otago and Auckland has revealed women who took a naturally occurring probiotic during pregnancy were less likely to have diabetes in pregnancy.Probiotics, considered as live bacteria and yeasts, are fitting for human health, especially the digestive system. The joint effort by the universities of Otago and Auckland employed the use of probiotic, Lactobacillus rhamnosus HN001, a common ingredient in the manufacturing of fermented milk products like yoghurt. It was reported that the substance was given in capsule form to 194 women a few months into pregnancy, while 200 women received a placebo.Gestational diabetes was examined at about 24 to 30 weeks during pregnancy.“Using the current New Zealand definition for gestational diabetes, 6.5 per cent of the women had diabetes in the placebo group, versus 2.1 per cent in the probiotic group.“This is a 68 per cent reduction.“We found that the protective effects were stronger among older women and were stronger among women who had previously had gestational diabetes,” the study leader, Professor Julian Crane of the University of Otago remarked. It was also observed that fasting blood glucose level was also considerably lower among women in the probiotic group compared to placebo.“This is an exciting result suggesting that this probiotic may be interacting with the normal gut bacteria in some way to reduce glucose levels in pregnancy,” he added. The researchers earlier proved that probiotic had effects on the immune system and lowered eczema by a 50 percent level in infancy.Crane was optimistic that the next stages would be to evaluate the possibility that the probiotic could reduce the gradually common risk in the population of rising diabetes.
