Former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu has revealed the names of some Nigerians who did their possible best to thwart the opposition against corruption in the nation as he presented the lead paper at the 2016 Annual Lecture organized by the Law Chambers of Joe Kyari Gadzama in Abuja.
With a theme titled ”˜Corruption and the Nigerian Economy: Lawyers as Change Agents’, noteworthy lawyer, Ben Nwabueze, former Attorney general and Minister of Justice, Michael Aondoakaa and his successor at the crimes commission, Farida Waziri were among the names listed out by Ribadu has having opposed the fight against corruption. Stating that Ben Nwabueze, SAN, conspired with politicians to ruin and disprove the work being done by the commission.”˜One thing that also did a serious damage to the war against corruption was the active connivance of some senior lawyers who represented the governors we charged to courts after the 2007 elections’, he said.He also pointed that Michael Aondoakaa seemed intent on destroying and frustrating the agency, also teaming up with Ribadu’s successor at the commission, Mrs. Farida Waziri who inflicted serious damages on the commission from which it is still yet to recover from.Some cases such as the Halliburton case were handed over to private lawyers who connived with some officials to enrich themselves from it.However, he listed out some lawyers who fought vehemently against corruption in the corruption naming Late activist Gani Fawehinmi, Femi Falana, present Vice president of Nigeria, Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), Mr. Tayo Oyetibo (SAN) and Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN).Discover more from NewsBreakers
