The centralization of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) was shortchanging rural communities, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area (LGA) of Rivers said on Monday. This observation was made by Tubotamuno Dabiri, APC Chairman in Akuku-Toru in an interview he granted the News Agency of Nigeria in Port Harcourt.Dabiri stated that amongst the factors discouraging people from registering is the cost of transportation from most of the coastal communities in the LGA to Abonnema.
This, he admitted, could amount to denying eligible voters the right to vote for their candidate of choice in the coming election, if they cannot register.“There are so many people willing to come out from their communities and villages to register but they could not afford the transport fares,” he stated.Mr Nicholas Ikiriko, the LGA party secretary also condemned INEC’s decision to centralize the CVR, because the decision would only be to the advantage of the LGAs and urban communities only.“How did INEC arrive at this decision? In Akuku-Toru for example, INEC did not consider how people from Kula, Abissa, Elem-Sangama, Idama and Soku would travel by boat to register in their LGA headquarters.“I expect that INEC by now would have deployed its staff and materials to these communities to register eligible voters,” he said. The APC chiefs in Akuku-Toru, made a plea to INEC to change its decision to encourage eligible voters perform their civic duties.
