It also mandated the committee on customs to investigate the circumstances that led to the sudden decision on the issue of vehicles importation through the land borders. These resolutions followed a motion sponsored by Senator Barau Jibrin and four other senators at Wednesday plenary.According to the motion titled, the ban on the importation of vehicles through the land borders into the country,” the senate expressed the belief that such policy is capable of adversely affecting the socio-economic activities of border villages and towns, and by extension all Nigerians.Senate also suggested that the Customs Service should allow for the importation of vehicles through one entry border post in each geo-political zone that has international land border in the country. This the lawmakers believe, would allow for better monitoring and control by the Customs as the land border posts shall become fewer to handle compared to the present situation. It would be recalled that the Nigerian Customs Service on the 1st of January 2017, began implementation of the ban on importation of vehicles through the country’s land borders.Reports suggest that the ban would lead to the loss of about five hundred thousand (500,000) jobs by the people engaged in the business of vehicles importation and handling services in the border areas and around Nigeria.Source: Agencies
