A Lagos based human rights group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), will today launch its latest report: ‘Go home and sin no more: Corrupt judges escaping from justice in Nigeria.”SERAP in a statement issued by its Executive Director, Adetokunbo Mumuni, said, “Through case studies, the report highlights judicial corruption and the impunity of corrupt judges in the country.“The report argues that the lack of judicial accountability for corruption has impeded efforts to fight corruption at the highest level of government, good governance, national development, the rule of law, and access of victims of human rights to effective remedies.“It demonstrates the importance of judicial accountability in contributing to increased public trust and confidence in the judiciary, and concludes that judges should not be allowed to avoid accountability for corruption if judicial impartiality and independence is to be held sacrosanct and access to justice is to be effectively achieved.“The report makes several recommendations to appropriate authorities in order to improve judicial accountability and access to justice while respecting judicial independence.”
