Suleja Flooding Kill Two, 10 Others Declared Missing

Recent rainfall and flooding has resulted in the death of two persons and no fewer than 10 others missing in Suleja near Abuja over the weekend.Chairman of Suleja LGA, Abdullahi Maje made this known to newsmen. Maje confirmed the deaths and bodies removed from the areas on Sunday.He also said 100 houses were involved, eight of which were totally destroyed following 10 hours of torrential rainfall.Eye witnesses said the incident, which occurred in Suleja and Tafa LGAs, both in Niger State, was suspected to have led to the death of eight members of a family. The only survivor was the householder who have been battling with the reality of the loss of his two wives and six children.Media reports confirmed more families were affected in the flooding.District Police Officer in charge of Division “A” Police Station Suleja could not give an official statement on the disaster but said his men are in the area to ascertain the level of damage.“The flood affected many people who built their houses along the river bank; many houses have been destroyed with unconfirmed number of deaths recorded.“Police are providing security around the scene so that hoodlums will not cart away victims’ property especially those lying outside,” he stated.However, the police officer promised to give further detail as it unfolds.The National Emergency Management Agency could not also give any figure of death.A village chief at Hayin Nasarawa-Iku in the Tafa LGA, Abdulkareem Samanja, regretted the disaster. He, however, hoped to receive report from ward head.A 17-year-old boy, Musliu Mohammed, who survived the flood was admitted at Suleja General Hospital after he was brought in by concerned residents.
