The Reigners Bible Church International was still undergoing construction and workers were rushing things so as to finish construction in time for the ordaining of the founder, Akan Weeks as a bishop on Saturday. The church was filled with hundreds of people including the Akwa Ibom State governor, Gov. Udom Emmanuel when the roof caved in. The governor and Akan Weeks however escaped unhurt.Ukeme Eyibio, a computer program analyst who rushed to the scene of the collapse to rescue people said that there were trapped bodies, body parts and personal belongings scattered everywhere. He had parked his car outside the complex to make a phone call when he heard a deafening explosion which he thought first was a bomb only to see that the church had disappeared. He and three other rescuers managed to drag 10 wounded people out but they were prevented from entering the main structure by a construction worker among them who warned them of the danger of a further collapse. He called his boss at Julius Berger Construction Company who sent a crane to lift debris off the bodies.Numerous victims have been sent to private mortuaries across Uyo while some have been taken by their relatives home due to the overcrowding and lack of refrigeration in the mortuaries. The church officials have tried to stop journalists from documenting this tragedy by seizing cameras and forcing them to leave the area.Ekerete Udoh, the governor’s spokesman said an investigation will be carried out to check for compromise in the building.
