In a bid to improve attendance rates in schools, education authorities in the United Kingdom have stated that parents will pay increased fines effective from this year. This takes effect if their children are out of school for no justifiable reason.
From July 19, 2024, each parent whose children are absent from school will pay an increased fine of £80 per child. If paid within 21 days or £160 per parent, per child, if paid within 28 days – as opposed to the initial £60.
Repeat offenders will have higher charges of “£160 per parent, per child if paid within 28 days” or legal sanctions as the government seeks to sanitize education.
The move is aimed at reducing absenteeism from schools which have perilous effects on children’s intellectual growth. Local authorities are to work closely with the schools to ensure compliance.
This act has been praised by educators and policy makers who see it as a step towards better education. According to the British Broadcasting Commission, a teachers’ union said fines were needed to avoid chaos in schools.
According to the UK government, the measures are needed to ensure every child has access to quality education and prepared for life.
The official statement, sent to parents and guardians with wards in UK public schools, obtained by our correspondent in seen below.
