University of Abuja chapter of SSANU suspends erring members

By

Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has suspended the Registrar of University of Abuja, Mrs. Rifkatu Hoshen Swanta and 21 others for alleged anti-union offences. The action of the Union came on the heel of alleged corrupt practices levied against some of the management staff and laying off of two members of the union by the Governing Council for whistle blowing. The titled suspension letter dated 12th April 2017 addressed to the Vice Chancellor accused the suspended members of holding illegal meeting. It recommended to the university management to immediately stop any payment of check-off dues of the affected members. SSANU Deputy National President, Mr. Moses Aogo, in an endorsed letter stated that the punitive action was necessitated by the National Administrative Council (NAC) at an earlier meeting, after due consideration of the report found the accused guilty of anti-union activities. The union then advised the University authority to ensure that “all the illegal actions taken by the suspended members such as locking of the SSANU secretariat, forging of the union’s letter headed paper to open Bank Accounts etc are reversed with immediate effect. “In the interest of industrial peace, management should also ensure the security of all lives and property of SSANU members on the campus.” It however stated that the Jude Nwabueze-led executive committee is the only leadership of SSANU recognized by the national body in the University of Abuja. Report showed that SSANU’s protest rally at the main campus of UNIABUJA, Wednesday was nearly disrupted by thugs purportedly hired by the university management.
