According to an official report from the University of Jos, not less than 19 candidates are pushing for the position of Vice-Chancellorship at the institution. The Assistant Registrar (Information and Public Relations), Abdullahi Abdullahi disclosed this to newsmen in Jos on Tuesday, adding that the eventual appointee would replace Prof Hayward Mafuyai, whose tenure would end in June. He revealed, ”˜Nineteen professors applied for the job. The screening by the selection committee will start today, April 19.’ Abdullahi also said that the selection board will recommend three of the candidates to the university’s governing board; he added that the majority of the applicants were from the university community while others were from other institutions. One of the major requirements was that the candidate to be appointed must be a highly distinguished scholar of the rank of Professor of not less than five years experience, and not less than 50 years old. Other conditions included wide administrative and managerial experience and the capacity to lead a university. The advertorial further stated, ”˜The candidate must also exhibit entrepreneurial drive and ability to attract funds and endowment, and must also be able to mobilize other resources for the development of the university.’
