(Breaking): Appeal Court Voids Nyako’s Impeachment as Governor

By Correspondent

The Yola division of the Court of Appeal on Thursday, upturned the removal of the impeached governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako. It would be recalled that the former governor was sacked on July 15, 2014, when 17 of 25 members of the Adamawa State House of Assembly adopted a report of a panel set up to investigate him for alleged corruption. Specifically, the report found the governor guilty of all the 16 allegations of gross misconduct. But, the appellate court, in its lead judgment read by Justice Tunde Ayotoye, held that Nyako’s impeachment in 2014 was not done in accordance with the provision of the law. The Appeal Court also declared that the impeached Nyako was not given a fair hearing in the impeachment proceedings. While ruling that Nyako’s right was violated, the Court of Appeal insisted that all the process that led to the impeachment was null and void. The appellate court further ordered that Nyako be accorded all the rights of the office of the governor of Adamawa State through the period of office, and be paid all his entitlements as governor of the state while it lasted.
