Jonathan’s ADC Sues EFCC, Demands N100m Damages for Illegal Detention

By Correspondent

Col Ojogbane Adegbe, an Aide de Camp (ADC) to former President Goodluck Jonathan, has brought the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) before an Abuja High Court, challenging the propriety of his alleged detention. Adegbe is claiming N100 million damages for his detention, which, according to him, has violated his fundamental rights. He made this known in a suit filed by his lawyer, Ogwu Onoja (SAN). The senior advocate also wants the court to give an order directing the EFCC to immediately release his client from unlawful detention. Onoja’s argument was based on the fact that the arrest and detention of his client by the EFCC violated his right to personal liberty and freedom of movement, guaranteed by Section 35 and 41 of the 1999 Constitution. He maintained that the EFCC’s continuous detention of his client violated Articles 5, 6 and 12 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. Further hearing on the matter has been adjourned to February 26.
