Abuja indigenes protest exclusion from reconstituted IRS board

By

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has witnessed the protest of some indigenes for non-inclusion in the reconstituted Board of the FCT Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) by President Muhammadu Buhari. The indigenes, who presented themselves as Abuja Original Inhabitants Youth Empowerment, made their displeasure known, ably represented by their leader, Mr Isaac David, in a media release on Sunday in Abuja. David made it clear that the FCT indigenes have the right of inclusion alongside other Nigerians appointed as board members of the organization for the sake of justice. “The group wishes to draw the attention of President Muhammadu Buhari to the fact that, the original inhabitants of FCT in various capacities are against its non-recognition as a state and the continuous disregard for political appointments.

”The Abuja natives are becoming more disturbed following recent list of FCT-IRS members approved by the President without the inclusion of an Abuja indigene.

The youth leader urged the government to ensure that the principle of federal character, as contained in the 1999 constitution, be followed in the selection of the revenue board.

“Appointments into political and other offices should be given to candidates who are indigenes of the FCT and states in the country,’’ he advised.

The recent approval of appointment of the FCT-IRS board, chaired by Abdullahi Oteh, was ordered by President Muhammadu Buhari.
