Advocaat favoured for third term experience as Netherland’s coach

By

Fenerbahce boss Dick Advocaat is on his third term bid for Netherland’s coaching job, De Telegraaf and Sky Sports confirmed.

Yet to celebrate his 70th birthday slated for September, Advocaat, would make history as the country’s oldest-ever national coach, taking the position of Guus Hiddink, who was 68 in June 2015 when he left the position.

Danny Blind, who was Hiddink’s successor, was sacked in March when his team was unable to qualify for the Euro 2016 and also lost by 2 0 margin to Bugaria in a World Cup qualifying.

Netherlands have lost two matches in their opening five Group A games and occupy the fourth position on the table, trailing six points behind group leaders, France and three behind second-placed Sweden.

Local media reports had it that Advocaat’s appointment would be confirmed immediately documents are signed.

Technical Director, Royal Dutch Football Association, Hans van Breukelen is set to speak on the development on Wednesday, as suggested by De Telegraaf.

Advocaat’s managerial experience as national boss spanned 1992-1994 and 2002-2004, and also as assistant coach, just the previous year.

Records have it that Rinus Michels has long stayed in that position.

One of those speculated as Advocaat’s assistant is Ruud Gullit. He has won the last five of his 66 caps during Advocaat’s tenure before a disagreement over strategies in the pre-season of the 1994 World Cup put an end to his international career. Advocaat however led Netherland to the quarterfinals of the World Cup in the US, a stage where they lost to Brazil and in the Semifinals at Euro 2004, where they lost to Portugal.
