African missions condemn Indian mob attacks

By

Indian racial attacks on students near New Delhi have been condemned by African missions in the country on Monday. The African missions called for an international inquiry, while condemning India’s indecision on the issue. The head of African missions, in a statement, criticized the Indian government for not willing to adequately condemn the violent attacks. “No known, sufficient and visible deterring measures were taken” by the Indian government. “These reprehensible events, both outstanding and unresolved cases against Africans, were not sufficiently condemned by the Indian authorities,” the mission said. According to it, there will be a “call for an independent investigation by the Human Rights Council as well as other human rights bodies”. The mob attack targeted at Nigerian students occurred on March 27 and it coincided with a protest by online groups who accused the unresolved death of a teenage student on the African community. The dead student, Manish Khari was alleged by protesters to have been supplied drugs by Africans who live in the community. However, India has commented on the attack on Nigerian students, describing it as “deplorable” and offer its commitment to ensuring safety and security of all foreigners in the country. “People from Africa, including students and youth, remain our valued partners,” the External Affairs Ministry has affirmed. According to the police, seven people have been arrested in relation to the attack, saying that plans are underway to round up other culprits. Delhi has not recorded attacks on Africans in recent times but in 2016, many Nigerians were beaten in Chhatarpur area of Delhi.
