African talks in Dakar collapse
By
There has been a collapse of talks in Dakar, Senegal, in pursuit of practicable solutions for many of Africa’s multifarious challenges. The Dakar talk crumbled when delegates could not reach an agreement three days after deliberations on the interpretation of rules of procedures governing the Tenth Joint Annual Meetings of the African Union Specialised Technical Committee on Finance, Monetary Affairs, Economic Planning and Integration and the Economic Commission for Africa Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development.Experts and stakeholders were expectant of the meetings fixed for Saturday, when all seemed to be right, but the chairman of Bureau of Committee of Experts announced the cancellation of the meetings.South Africa, Zimbabwe and Libya rallied round Algeria and Nigeria in condemning the result. However, delegates from Morocco and Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic are at each other’s throat as to who is to blame for sabotaging the meeting. The meeting fixed for Thursday was hampered by the sharp differences on the interpretations of rules and procedures to govern the participants. Principal partners of the event also got their fair share of the blame. The differences at the event otherwise known as African Development Week, could rub off negatively on the works and submission of ministers’ meeting scheduled for Tuesday, 27 March 2017.The UN Economic Commission for African has said being an organ of the United Nations, its participation is not guaranteed at any of the joint meetings. There is a clear statement on the participation of non-member in any of its events. Non-members are only allowed to attend if no UN member country objects to such decision. In view of this, delegates from North African country, Morocco expressed concerns over participation of delegates from Western Sahara.Discover more from NewsBreakers
