An auto crash which claimed one life and injured many others has occurred on Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, involving a school bus conveying teachers and pupils from Bayelsa State. The Enugu State Commissioner for Health, Dr Sam Ngwu, confirmed the incident in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Thursday.Ngwu remarked that the accident occurred at Ugwu Onyeama, near Enugu in the evening on Wednesday.According to him, the incident involved 40 people, some of who are pupils of the age range of between seven and 15 years. They were on their way to the Ngwo Forestry in the Udi Local Government Area for an excursion.“The victims were on excursion to Enugu State. Their bus fell into a gully and many of them sustained multiple fractures, lacerations, cuts and swellings on their faces.“Some of the victims were immediately taken to nearby hospitals in Ngwo, following the intervention of the State Government.“One of the teachers died in the process, which is a miracle, considering the severity of the accident,” the commissioner stated.Ngwu commented on the quick response of the State Government by deploying four ambulances to help take the victims to the hospital.“Eleven persons were severely injured. Ten of them were later transferred to the National Orthopedic Hospital, while others were moved to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital.”Ngwu declared that his Bayelsa State counterpart had been informed of the incident and was on his way to Enugu to commiserate with the victims. However, in his reaction, Enugu State Commissioner for Information, Dr Godwin Udeuhele, decried the bad state of Enugu-Onitsha highway, noting that it has caused the loss of many lives.“We urge the Federal Government to expedite its intervention on that road to minimise loss of lives and property,” Udeuhele advised.
