CAS urges journalist to take caution on security issues

 Chief of Army Staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin, has urged journalists to ensure they exercise limit to reporting of security issues with serious implications. He emphatically stated that reporters seek a balance in reporting from the military point of view through relevant quarters, reminding them the willingness of the Directorate of Defence Information to offer assistance as regards media issues about the military. Represented by Rear Admiral Jonathan Ango, Olonisakin, spoke at a one-day 2017 Defence Correspondents’ Seminar, which took place at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja yesterday. He asked journalists especially Defence Correspondents to at all times, intimate with the Director of Defence Information, DDI, for official statements for clarification. Olonisakin, accepted the role played by the media in the restoration of peace in the country, majorly in the north east and that is why the military has given an open door policy to media organizations to always have the permission and provided armed escorts to the military’s theatres of operation. “Likewise, some Non Governmental Organisations and Civil Society Organisations were facilitated to perform their duties at different locations of the mission areas nationwide, “he stated. The Chief of Defence Staff added that the Defence Headquarters would continue to use the existing amiable relationship between the media and the military, “having in mind the critical role media plays on military operations.” “It is in acknowledgement of this enormous and vital role, that this forum is being given all necessary support, so as to further explore more areas for collaboration and partnership. “Indeed, our determination and resolve to restore peace and security in the country have never been in doubt. The Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies are working assiduously to ensure that terrorism and criminalities among others are checkmated,” he said.
