A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), under the platform of the Registered Trustees of the Mission for Peace and Development Initiative, has initiated a court action against the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) Chairman, Justice Danladi Umar, over allegation of N10million bribe to throw out a criminal case against a certain accused person before him.The NGO through its lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN) insisted that it has documents to prove that the CCT Chairman, made a request of N10m as a bribe from a retired Comptroller of Customs, Mr. Rasheed Taiwo, apparently to stop further hearing on a case that was pending against him at the Tribunal. The group maintained that out of the total agreed bribe, Justice Umar, through his personal assistant, Mr. Gambo Abdullahi, received the sum of N1.8million as initial deposit. The NGO is specifically asking the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja to issue an order compelling Justice Umar to vacate his position as the CCT Chairman on the reason that he is not fit and proper to superintend over the criminal prosecution of any Nigerian, since he has a criminal case hanging on his neck.It further tendered before the court a recommendation by the former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN), requesting that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), prosecute Justice Umar as a result of the bribery allegation. The recommendation came sequel to the EFCC’s report after its investigation into the petition made against Justice Umar by the retired Comptroller of Customs.Adoke had also in a letter with reference number HAGF/SH/2014/Vol./41, dated May 7, 2015 and addressed to immediate past President Goodluck Jonathan, approved the removal of Justice Umar as Chairman of the CCT as a result of corruption allegation made against him.The letter reads: “I am of the humble opinion that the current state of affairs by which the Tribunal is unable to sit while the institution is increasingly diminished by the pall of suspicion, should not be allowed to fester, as it will expose the institution to public ridicule and undermine this administration’s efforts to combat corruption.“In the light of the foregoing therefore, Your Excellency may wish to initiate the necessary steps for the removal of the Chairman.”Defendants in the suit include: Justice Umar, the CCT, EFCC and the Attorney General of the Federation.
