Chile hit by 6.8 magnitude earthquake

Central Chile on Monday has been struck by a strong 6.9-magnitude earthquake. The quake, which was confirmed by US geologists, struck at 6.30pm (2130 GMT) and had its epicenter about 38 kilometers (60miles) off the coast of Valparaiso. It also recorded a depth of 9.8 kilometers (six miles), as US Geological Survey showed.A misconception by the USGS formally revealed that the quake measured 7.1, but later reassessed. Chilean authorities ordered local residents to avoid coastal areas as a precaution immediately after the quake, but waved the order aside when no larger vibrations were noticed.Chile’s emergency agency, ONEMI, reported that there were no instant reports of damage or casualties.Chile occupies a region known as the “Ring of Fire”, characterized by fault lines surrounding the Pacific Basin, which is liable to recurring earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.Reports of similar incident showed that the north of the country was struck by an 8.3-magnitude tremor, succeeded by a tsunami in September 2015, leading to the death of 15 people.Same was in 2010, when a quake measuring 8.8 in magnitude struck with a tsunami in its wake and affected the central and southern parts of the country, leaving behind about 500 deaths.
