Dogara Condemns Tax Evasion in Nigeria

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has condemned the attitude of some individuals and organisations over tax remittance. Speaking when he played host to the President of Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), Dr Teju Somorin in his office, Dogara argued that the situation was becoming worrisome as some people make huge sums of money without remitting the accompanying taxes to the government. The speaker said, “To be candid, we are worried. For instance, in Abuja here an individual can sell a property of up to a billion naira and he will not pay a dime as tax. “And there are so many Nigerians who are not paying taxes. So what is it that we can actually do as a country? What is the problem? Is it absence of an enabling legal framework? “Is it that we have a robust framework but the problem is implementation? What is the challenge? How can we resolve it?” he asked.
