By

In its initiative to find a lasting solution to gender inequality, the Ecuadorian Ambassador to Nigeria, HE Leopoldo Rovayo has hosted the Young Journalist Forum, which featured Country Director of Global Rights, Abiodun Bayewu, as guest speaker.Abiodun Bayewu identified the obvious causes of inequality, which include culture, values, tradition, cost of education, weak laws, weak implementation of existing policies, insurgency in the north east and corruption. The effect, according to Bayewu, is endemic poverty, and under-development, public health issues, child marriage, population implosion, child labour floundering GDP and Climate Change. She encouraged Nigerians to demand government to give priority to education in both policy and practice; request for firm commitment from government to provide free primary school education to all, inclusive of the vulnerable or marginalized groups. Her recommendation also enlist encouraging the private sector to invest resources in the development of educational tools and facilities. The choice of the topic, according to Coordinator, Young Journalists Forum, Nigeria, Mr. Chukwuma Nzeh, was to project the challenges faced by the girl-child in Nigeria, in view of years of deprivation, occasioned by cultural and traditional practices, which are subject to positive change. But Ambassador Leopoldo said exchange of experiences in the area of teaching people to being part of the solution instead of aggravating the problem is key. He also said religion should be detached from politics, as there is a tendency for fanaticism, which can endanger the society. The Deputy Head of Mission Embassy of Ecuador, Mr Jaime Campas, said that cultural matters, religion and discrimination are notable factors working against girl-child education in Ecuador, Nigeria and other parts of the world. His submissions also affirmed the general notion sometimes held about women, that they cannot perform some tasks, however, he said the records show that women excel in diverse sectors.
