A sum of N1.7 billion has been earmarked by the Nasarawa state government for the purpose of checking erosion in the state.Gov. Umaru Al-Makura disclosed this during an inspection tour of the areas affected by flood and gully erosion at Tudun-Kauri and Angwan-Sha’u communities in the state capital, LafiaHe listed the corrective measure to the environmental hazard as the building of canals and 60 by 60 drainage, which will help forestall the menace of flood and gully erosion. The project will commence in August this year, according to him.Al-Makura also made it clear that the policy direction of government since the beginning of the administrative year was to engage in physical planning of the urban centres across the state. He said until this is achieved, the government will not relent. It was also gathered that the government is worried about the hardship the state residents are passing through in the event of flooding, a challenge causing many to become homeless.Al-Makura assured of government’s effort at engaging some agencies which would help to restore normalcy by putting in place urgent measures. The governor also advised city dwellers and other state residents, particularly, those residing in most affected areas, to refrain from discharging refuse in water channels.
