Federal government is on to make real its promise to reopen Government Girls’ Secondary School (GGSS), Chibok, Borno State, where 276 school girls were kidnapped by Boko Haram in April 2014.The government is preparing to reopen the school for the 2017/2018 academic session.This was revealed Thursday by Mr Tijjani Tumsah, the Vice-Chairman of the Presidential Committee on North-East Initiative.Not fewer than 276 female students of Government Girls’ Secondary School, Chibok, in Borno South Senatorial District, were kidnapped by armed Boko Haram members on April 14, 2014, but only 50 of them flee from their captors.Government negotiations with the sect enabled the release of 21 out of the remaining 219, while three others ran away unaided.According to Tumsah, all required security actions were being put to play to prevent a repetition of the April 2014 incident.“We intend to finish with the school before next session and make it functional for educational activities to pick up.“We have varieties of programmes, including psycho-social and counselling programmes for women and girls and community engagements.“In terms of the structure itself, the school has to be fortified in terms of early warning systems to protect the girls.“A whole lot of issues that have been planned to ensure the safety and comfort of the students of the school judging by the previous unfortunate incident,’’ he said.Tumsah also said the committee would execute related programmes that would improve education, which had been beset with hindrances due to the Boko haram insurgency in the north east.He ensured that the committee was reflecting on suitable programs that would help in dissuading the youth, as ways of keeping with the Muhammadu Buhari administration mandate.Tumsah said those programs would involve provision of opportunities to the youth in the area of vocational skills acquisition, making steps to check insurgency in order to chart a new lease of life.
