First Case of Zika Virus Confirmed in China

By Correspondent

The first case of the Zika virus has been confirmed in China. The virus was carried by a man who had recently travelled to South America. This was revealed by Hong Kong’s Department of Health on Wednesday in a statement made in Beijing that the infected Chinese man had travelled to Venezuela and displayed symptoms including a fever, headache and dizziness on Jan. 28. The man was said to have returned home on Feb. 5, via Hong Kong and Shenzhen. The infected man has been quarantined at a hospital in his hometown since Feb. 6, he is recovering with normal body temperature and a fading rash. The Hong Kong’s Port Health Office has stepped up inspections at the airport in response, and reinforced training for boundary control inspectors. The Hong Kong Health Department, however, said no cases of the virus in Hong Kong had been reported, so far. The Health department expressed their fears that there was risk that the Zika virus could be spread locally if it was introduced to Hong Kong, because Aedes Albopictus mosquitoes, which transmit the virus, live there. However, Ko Wing-man, Hong Kong Secretary for Food and Health, revealed to reporters that investigations are on-going by the bureau; they are seeking details of the man’s travel history, from the mainland authorities because he had transited through the city.
